ANOTHER ROAD TRIP TO THURSO

25th-27th September 2009

What with the long and windless summer we've had, it didn't take much of a forecast to persuade Rich Potter (British Wave Champ) and myself to head up to Scotland with the big dogs. Three days of 11ft @ 11seconds and 25mph SW would do nicely!...

After driving through the night we arrived to find what we had come for; head-logo high waves, 5m cross-off wind and the added bonus of sunshine! Sweeeeeeet.

I decided it would be best to get some decent shots in the bag, so I volunteered to be camera gimp for the first hour.
Here's the lovely pics of Rich getting dialled in..

Took him a while to get over his fear of the boils, but he was soon smacking it..

Then it was my turn. Unfortunately the sun promptly disappeared behind a huge black cloud and I hadn't told Rich how to adjust the settings..  Fortunately the magic of modern technology meant I could rescue these from the almost black originals with Photoshop..

Check the sky out!..

Proper waves at last!

And then disaster struck - after about 20 minutes the wind completely sodded off...

We didn't know it at the time, but that hour and twenty minutes would be our entire windsurfing experience for the whole trip. Bugger.

So it was time for some surfing and we decided to have a snoop around to find B*gpipes...

Not exactly firing like the magazine star we all know but pretty chunky all the same.

Far more interesting was this reef though, which 5 French guys from Biarritz were all over, plus a water camera man and a filmer on the cliff! Check out this drop!...

I thought better of getting in their way and surfed a lefthander instead, thinking I'd go back the next day..

Saturday morning and the glum realisation dawned that we weren't getting any more wind. Worse still the swell looked pretty rubbish. We did the drive round until 3 'o' clock, finally finding a decent wave on one of the beach breaks but it just happened to have a canoeing contest going on..

We ended up surfing Thurso 'til late then hitting the town for a few beers.

Sunday dawned with better swell and we headed straight back to the reefs we found on Friday. I surfed the left with Rich who's getting into his surfing too, whilst waiting for the tide to be right for the spot the French dudes had been at.

Then I took on the evil right!..

I'm not sure how different it was but I couldn't get into any of them, maybe needed better swell, maybe I'm just crap. It was super ridiculously shallow and I had to call it a day when the reef smashed all the fins off my board before I'd even ridden anything! (luckily my new O'shea was still in one piece)
Perhaps why no-one else was on it...

Image

Went back and surfed the left before we hit the road, just as it started to get windy again!

So we got fully skunked on the wind front, but the surfing was awesome and has yet again been my saviour!

Looks like there's a proper wind forecast for this weekend, so maybe some speedsailing is in order. Check out the latest times from the Australian dudes, F*KING QUICK! Be nice to get something like that..
